Miriam Toews memoir of her father's struggle with manic depression in a small Mennonite community is astounding. Written from her father's perspective the book is both beautiful and sad. I would recommend it to anyone.

This really wasn't at all what I was expecting it to be. I thought Miriam would be talking about her father's life, which is technically accurate but I had no idea it would be written in HIS voice. As in his thoughts and inner monologue.

Is this still classified as nonfiction? She can't possibly know what her father was thinking at these moments??

My favourite sections were the prologue and epilogue (I cried lol) and I'm glad I read it even though it wasn't entirely what I expected.

Interesting result of the author's investigation into her father's life, which she wanted to understand better after he committed suicide. As his history comes slowly more into focus, along with much that can never be fully comprehended, it creates a touching portrait of a man who struggled to live well, against incredible obstacles, with an end both tragic and uplifting.

9/10. There is no one on the planet who writes about depression and suicide with as much humor, compassion, and care as Miriam Toews. This was a beautiful portrait of her father.
