This was a fun read! Finlay is sweeped into the world of organized crime when she is mistakenly taken for a hit woman for hire. Of course she has no choice but to chronological the experience which turns into a best selling novel.

I’ve had this book on my TBR for way too long, I wish I had read it long ago! This book captures it all. From the too stressed mom down on her luck to the messiness of a contract killer juggling evidence like she’s been doing it for years. Only, she hasn’t. She’s an author and based on what she says “no one reads these books” I love the first POV the author wrote this in, and Finlay has you hooked right from the beginning. If this is on your TBR, I recommend pushing it further up your pile. It is definitely worth it.

This is kind of like grown up Harriet the Spy. The set ups for Finlay to be the one to unravel the mystery were somewhat unbelievable, but also totally entertaining. At first I wasn’t sure about the book within a book (especially when the book is ABOUT the book) but it ended up working.

Characters: there was a little bit of a love triangle with Nick and Julian, and both felt like they might be throw-away characters at times. I liked how Finlay’s choices showed where she was at with emotional growth, though. Finlay’s daughter would have been believable if she were older but, alas, she did not speak like any preschooler I’ve ever met. The villains (all of them, there were many) were kind of one dimensional but anything else would have bloated the book so it worked. Lastly: Vero-we needed her! Her relationship with Finlay made the book and this turned into the murder buddy-comedy I have been searching years for.

Pacing: this was great. We get right into the action, suspend our disbelief, and have few chances to question things because the bool moves. I liked the layers that were added to the story that made it feel dynamic rather than convoluted.

Plot: We were not here for that, ok? But it provided our MCs the setups they needed to both grow and crack us up so it’s a win.

I’ll definitely be continuing the series!

This was so fun! I’ve seen the Finlay Donovan books everywhere for such a long time, but never picked one ip because I was worried it’d be overhyped. It definitely wasn’t. The characters were so funny and relatable (especially Finlay), the plot was fast paced and engrossing, and the whole thing put together was so engaging and fun. I’ll definitely be picking up the next one soon!
