If you only want to read one or two books on writing, then choose Stephen King's 'On Writing' and this one. But if you only ever read one book on writing, this should be it. The writing itself is a bit dry and it's long and requires attentive reading, but the content is important and it'll definitely get a deserving spot in my library.

Even though written for screenwriters, the book is as applicable to any type of story teller. It breaks down the art of story telling and uses movies as examples for relatable applications. This is a book I know I will return to again and again over the years. An amazing resource and tool.

There is some really useful knowledge in this book. It tied in well with my own experiences and illuminated why some approaches work better than others.
On the downside, the end came to me very abruptly (listening to the audiobook version). There were also multiple occasions when the author's writing in the book itself could have been better or where I disagreed with his interpretation of movies and characters. Furthermore, he made very forceful statements that left little tolerance for different approaches or opinions. It's a very good think piece, but it didn't entirely satisfy me.

so like i get the sense that robert mckee the kind of dude who would see knives out and go like "oh yeah i loved these story beats when robert towne used them IN CHINATOWN" and i'd go like "THEY'RE NOT EVEN SIMILAR, LIKE EVEN A LITTLE BIT" and look over and discover he wasn't even listening to me b/c he was busy figuring out how to share a facebook meme on his new smartphone

but like all that being said he is so clearly a master of his craft and i learned a lot from this book. this + film crit hulk, good duo.

A lot of good advice but very basic. I learned nothing new from it but those new to the subject might.
