Fantastic deep dive into the history of pinball, starting with an archaic early cousin called bagatelle and ending with the post-internet resurgence. I knew a decent amount about pinball to begin with but learned a lot. It amuses me that pinball was actually illegal in a lot of places in midcentury America for fear of corrupting the kiddoes.

Interesting read! This is a really deep dive into the history of pinball.  The panels were super informative while also adding to the larger narrative in meaningful ways. At certain points this reads like an academic article, but it never rises to the point where it can't be easily understood.

I really appreciated the inclusion of the glossary and diagrams at the end.  The final pages also include pinball tips and tricks as well as a list of pointers for people trying pinball for the first time.

I will admit that even though I ejoyed this I felt like it lulled in the middle. Although that lull was quickly swept away during the chapter comparing video games to pinball.  It was extremely helpful in contextualizing pinball with other giants of pop culture.

This author is obviously very passionate about the subject and it shines through from start to finish.

I really love it when the graphic novel medium is used for non-fiction. It’s such an interesting melding of concepts and PINBALL is no different. I’m not necessarily a pinball enthusiast, but I really enjoyed going through its history in this book—especially through its art. It had me searching up where I can find local pinball machines by the end.

Thank you to First Second Books for providing me with an ARC for a fair review.
