Oh look, another middle aged handsome man who finds himself saving the world and look at that, a sexy woman to accompany him who he develops a horrible romance with.
Two words; bad writing. His writing is so simple and dull, after you've already read one of his books the plot alone can't keep you interested. Maybe Da Vinci Code had me interested because it was the first Dan Brown book I read but then I read this and the plot followed the same pattern and you just know not to trust anything that happens in the beginning and you just know what to expect, it's like watching those detective shows.
His writing is an insult to literature. Dan Brown is one of the most overrated writers, his books are good for nothing but a cheap thrill.

I read this at the urging of my husband (he read it and wanted me to read it before we watch the movie); it isn't what I would typically read. That being said, I liked the novel for what it was: a fluffy, semi-suspenseful, "best-seller list" type of read. Brown doesn't write well, which I knew going into the book. His adjectives and descriptions aren't imaginative by any means, but his way of weaving historical fact into his fiction is. I looked up a lot of the people, places, etc. on the internet as I was reading the book and found that nearly everything he references has a basis in fact (and the places are real of course). Part of the reason that I liked the books is because I've been to Italy so I know the places he refers to in a personal way.
As for the negative, Brown gets a bit fantastical at times. So as not to spoil anything, all I will say is that the helicopter scene was just too much. At times, I felt like Brown was thinking, "But wait! And then this happens! And then this! If I add that it will be even better!" This novel shouldn't require the suspension of disbelief on the part of the reader, but I found that at times it did.

The ending sucked!!! Up to that point, I found it an enjoyable read...the most disturbing thing was that I read this book and then the pope really did die!! And my daughter was teething and I was so sleep-deprived, I started confusing the book with reality...
