Hilariously overwritten. There is a really interesting book about Dean Martin buried underneath all the narrative posturing and pointlessly elaborate detail. That book would be great - a microhistory of 20th century America as seen through the life of an entertainer - but it's not quite worth getting through Tosches' book to see it through. A full cataloguing of things that are off and unnecessary about this book would be too long and boring to read.
