Loved the characters - they were flawed but strong.
Loved the way Mandarin was incorporated in the novel, as well as Shanghai's historical background.
There was so much suspense that my fingers were itching.
The ending was great - though heartbreaking, sad and horrifying. It makes me look forward to book to!

Own voices story with some lgtbq+ rep Slow paced feels like historical fiction ya with elements of horror/gore. Heavy political socieoeconomics for the time with xenophobic connotations and multiculturalism within Shanghai. Really well written. You can tell the author loves the city. Doesn’t really read like fantasy. Minimal romance. Pace really picks up in the last seven or so chapters when everything comes together. Didn’t feel much connection to the main characters who are morally grey but side characters Kathleen, Marshall and Alisa are really likeable and interesting. I liked learning their stories.

Truly a wonderful take on Romeo and Juliet that is violent and brutal and passionate. Word of warning though. The violence is super gory, much more than I thought it would be (people tear out their throats with their bare hands--not a spoiler, this happens in the first few chapters) and I would have liked to be a bit more prepared for what was coming.

On reading it through a second time (and apparently in the last year I've lost a lot of my capacity to deal with the levels of gore that is depicted in this book), I felt that this series just didn't hit him the same way the first time. It's not bad, just not for me anymore.
