This books was lowkey overhyped. I’d only recommend it if you really like the Enemies to Lovers trope. If you do, it’s literally perfect. If you don’t, it’s meh. Especially since the book is less of a coherent story and more a collection of Booktok's favorite tropes stringed together. The plot is really put to the side for the romance. Which is fine. It just isn’t my preference. I don’t really have a gripe with the book though, since overall, it’s exactly what people (including the author) say it is and advertise it as. That being said, I don’t think I’ll be buying any more of Gong’s books.

This book has been on my radar since it came out, but it took me a few times of picking it up to finally finish it. This book was pitched to me a "Romeo and Julliet" retelling, and that is all I knew going into it. If you are looking for a romance between star-crossed lovers, this is not the book for you because the romance is very slow coming, and I do not feel that love is the focus of the story.
Although I do think the author successfully accomplished a Shakespeare retelling, this book was not what I expected. The story had a lot of political themes, which "Romeo and Julliet" did as well (and I think a lot of people overlook when they romanticize "Romeo and Julliet"), but that made the book a little denser than what I was looking to enjoy.
Overall, I think the book is well written, and is very immersive with the setting. I think it is ambitious, and I am sure the sequel is a great addition to the story.

I gave this book five stars because was incredibly satisfying and wonderful to read. The Romeo and Juliet rewrite aspect of this book isn't as prominent as eluded to, however I enjoyed that this book came to be its own story. It's complicated, raw, and honest, and I really connected with Juliette's struggle between being American and being Chinese. It really hurts you to watch the characters corner themselves in their own lies, but there is also inexplicable joy in seeing the characters momentarily forgetting about all of their struggles. I love books that don't have happy endings, because they're hard to find, but I was so attached to these characters that I wanted them to end on a high note. Please, read this book. Read the next book too. This book is the kind of book that you'll fall in love with. (I've seen many people say that this book is hard to follow, but for me it was fine. I read fantasy/sci fi/historical fiction/speculative fiction a lot, so I'm pretty used to having to follow lots of world-building. If you're into these genres, then I think that you'll be fine, and come to really appreciate the blend of history, politics, and fantastical elements that this series offers.) I haven’t stopped thinking about these books since.
