This book is astounding for its sheer ambition and scope. Plot-wise, it’s unparalleled, but when it comes to characterization it can be a bit dry. This has been one of my favorites for a long time even though KSR can ramble off on a tangent. I learned more about Mars reading this novel than any other book past or present.

This was one of the best books I've read in a long time. Even though the content can be quite technical at times, I never felt out of my depth while reading. The characters are all very realistic and while a lot happens plot-wise, the novel is extremely character-driven. Also, even though this was written in the 90s the plot, the politics, and the science is still surprisingly accurate. All in all: thoroughly researched and highly enjoyable!
