I loved the beginning but as it went on I never felt a connection with the characters, the world building felt flat over time and the description felt long.

man i read this and my main takeaway was like 'wow this really is like the basis that informs every aspect of Terraforming Mars the board game huh.' Other than that i don't know. took me a LONG ASS TIME to get thru this one, it's dense, it has a lot of thoughts about idk bacteria and pylons and CO2. This is obviously a quite old example of KSR but i can see why in more recent books he seems to have gone with many characters giving different perspectives on world events, since his strengths seem to be in ideas rather than character work. like he DOES characters here but i'm not sure he should have. not sure i will pick up the next two- i'm interested in theory but throughout this book i Trudged

While o didn't find the scientific parts very enjoyable they did lead to some interesting notions about terraforming, the characters at times came off slightly one note but not too bad, the best parts are definitely the inter solar system politics and the idea of haven on Mars from a increasingly unstable earth.

Very long. Thorough. Sometimes tedious. 3.5 rounded up.

The only reason it didn’t get 1 is because I powered through and finished. So darn slow. Too heavy on the description/science and too low on plot and moving the book along. I liked Nadia and John but not really any of the other characters.
