Red Mars

Kim Stanley Robinson

3.75 AVERAGE

Surprisingly gripping (for me), exhaustively researched, hyper-realistic telling of the first colonists on Mars. I think the dedication to describing every part of Mars the characters travel through was excessive at times, but also led to some incredible setpieces at key points during individual characters' arcs. Some of the character writing also felt a little inconsistent, it follows that classic sci-fi trope where characters are meant to represent some ideal, and as a result sometimes feel less than human / believable for my preferences.

I am struggling to understand the pacing, the motivation of the characters is not something I'm currently connecting with. I may pick this up again in the future
slow-paced

A fantastic piece of work - to write this, the author had to have a solid working knowledge of a lot of fields, from cultural anthropology to psychology to astrophysics to chemistry to botany to... I don't know how he does it. And then to take the story and make it flow, weaving all those elements together and creating drama and tension - he's a master.

probably a bit too long, otherwise, 4 stars. really interesting throughout, from terra-forming to struggling against evil multi-national corporations.

Struggled with the audio book towards the end but very good and I needed to read something about revolutions and utopia.
