Really into space travel and space colonization SciFi lately and this hits all the checkmarks. I'd probably rate it lower, because there's no real ending, but the whole trilogy is out by now so it really doesn't matter.

What could/would humans do to Mars to colonize it? What would Mars do to them? What kind of people could even survive the attempt? These are the questions that the Mars trilogy try to answer very very thoroughly.

And then there's the science--geology, ecology, genetics, mechanics.....yay for Science in Science Fiction! Lush passionate real science that seriously considers the world itself--not just as theater dressing. Especially real ecology instead of just dippy emotional environmentalism.

The first and final thirds of the book are thrilling and packed with great ideas, but I found the middle section a bit on the flabby side, and tough going. The scale of the whole piece is mindblowing, and I really want to read the other two parts, but I’m such a slow reader I worry I’ll struggle through them.

For me this book was a slog. There was so much technobabble and the characters were flat. I like the larger questions about how to govern a newly colonized planet, the role of big corporations in colonization and the ethics of terraforming. For me, though, this was not a very enjoyable read.
