Finished. This was a LONG book with a lot of unlikeable characters. A neat idea but I got to the point at the end that I was only mildly curious at how it would turn out. Not sure I’ll continue with the trilogy ever, but I certainly won’t right now.

Assigned reading for a class. I read most of it, but it was so boring I couldn't finish. I think there was finally some action at the end, but once my class was over I never got around to picking it up again.

I didn't like this book and I don't say that very often.

I didn’t mind the story, I’m actually curious how the other two books continue it. But I’m not smart enough for all the scientific explanations and descriptions of the planet. I had to stop reading halfway and then muscled through the second half after months of inactivity. The writing was also a little hard to follow, and sometimes I was confused whether I was reading a flashback or the normal narrative.

Lots of science, pretty heavy. I bought it 15 years before I read it. Probably won't wait quite that long for Green Mars but my brain does need a break.

I just could not finish this. Great ideas, but I just found myself slogging through this book, and not caring about the characters.

not the sort of book to have read to you while coming out of a coma. just sayin'.

Good, but sooooo dense!

I like books like this (survival!) and I just let the super sciencey terms and explanations wash over me. I’m not a reader who says “well actually....” while reading this type of book. You say technology/weather/Mars works that way, author? Cool. I have no knowledge of the science behind it, so I just don’t ask questions.
