i have mixed thoughts about this. for one thing i’ve read a lot of sci fi this year for someone who isn’t super into sci fi (i dont mind it but i wouldn’t say it’s my normal go-to at all) so maybe im getting bored with the extra terrestrial. i’m also biased because i really enjoyed ‘the ministry for the future’, written by the same author nearly 30 years later and i felt ‘red mars’ wasn’t as well crafted as i was, perhaps naively, expecting based on how awesome that was.
in general i did enjoy this though, the descriptions of mars were super pretty and i did feel connected with key characters despite the huge range and the perspective shifts.
overall, solid, but not my favourite sci fi of the year - i think i'll leave the rest of the trilogy til 2024
