So… Red Mars. I went into this expecting it to live up to its reputation as one of the best science fiction narratives of the twentieth century. What I got was a 30 hour long extended family drama full of un-feeling scientists, sex cults, racism, egomaniacal men, more sex cults, and egomaniacal man sex cults. Did I mention the sex cults? There were lots of those. This book had to have been written by man, it just has one of those vibes. All the women used sex as a political tool, and there was so much of it. I found this book to be an exercise in unrealism- how quickly terraforming took place, the general politics of the world, it felt like fantasy. A very mundane fantasy. 2/5

Compelling, with what still feels like an accurate portrayal of, perhaps, our not-too-distant future.
