A short story about two women who meet and have an instant connection. However one of them starts to realize that things are not what they seem. Full review to come.

Full review: I dropped this a star because parts of the story don't ring true to me, at times Lucy feels way too young for the actions she takes after she meets her new BFF, Elle. If Lucy was in her early 30s, or even 20s, it would have been a better set-up, but she's in her mid-40s and divorced, it didn't seem to "sound right" that she would get this caught up with a new friend.

"When We Were Friends" follows Lucy. Lucy is divorced and struggling with the wrongness of her former husband and trying to coparent with him while living in Connecticut. Lucy, is an ex-pat from England (also, why are they called ex-pats and not legal aliens....anyhoo, moving on) and has realized since she moved from England, she's lost touch with her best friend and feels at a lost about what is next for her. When she goes to a singles night, she ends up meeting a woman called Elle in the bathroom. An instant connection forms, and then Lucy finds herself meeting up with Elle, texting, and finding that she finally feels whole in a way she hasn't in years. But something dark there lingers.

I thought the development of Lucy was great, and the cracks in the friendship with Elle were slow to show. But we get a really good twist which had me literally gasping. And ready to fight. I don't know if my reaction would have been the same, but the book flow was great. My big issue outside of Lucy's age, was the ending just kind of happens. I think I wanted more fireworks, something.

I loved this book because I was feeling all of the emotions right along with Lucy. I felt the complete devastation and betrayal at the Thai restaurant and wanted to throw my phone because I did not want that betrayal to happen!
Showing Lucy's mental health journey throughout the book attempts to normalize the fact that every person on earth faces multiple, differing, complex, situations and that getting help processing those emptions can lead to better mental health, healthier relationships, and can potentially help you to become a happier version of your self.
