So fascinating that this novel was written in the 1500’s. There are some backward ideas like women still having to answer to their husbands. However there are some very modern Republican ideas. Furthermore the book is humane and holds that every human life deserves dignity.
I think this novel would have been quite prolific for its time and environment. Some of these forward and modern ideas have been around since the Greeks, which the book mentions. However, for 16th century England this would of been quite progressive and almost treacherous as there is no support for a world living under a monarchy.
A short, snappy and prolific book that discusses philosophies we still get wrong to this day.

While Moore was very much ahead of his time on a variety of issues, including criminal justice and environmentalism, this mock account of the perfect nation (the Greek word “utopia” translates to “nonsense”) is not only a chore to read but the goals of the aptly named nation are impossible to realize as they require every single citizen in the nation, including politicians, businessmen and convicted criminals, to act completely ethical, logical and reasonable at all times. While Moore was incredibly perceptive and quick to identify the flaws in Western European societies, his prescription (which can be summarized as “everyone just needs to stop being selfish and stupid”), while commendable, is hopelessly impractical.
Incredible how something written so long ago feels fresh, pertinent, and maintains some great tongue-in-cheek humour
utopia
it seems to me the island of utopia sits amidst a great gyre, where thought and meaning are sucked towards a pacific rest away from the practical and the real. only the truly grounded amongst us can cut through this gyre and sail for open waters. and yet perhaps these practical thinkers guarantee nothing for themselves except for striving (perhaps a nice job and a nice house?).
my thoughts then will make the trip to that island, and perhaps stay there, dreaming of a land of light as the storm clouds of the 21st century close in.
so do we need these islands of utopias to guide us? do we need those cities-on-hills as way markers? i don’t know. but it certainly seems that i do, that i am sucked into the gyre of the world as it could be; good/better/best.

Had to read for a class. Would rather slice out my eyeballs vs listening to this egotistical man make up a fake story.
