The first book in this series took a while for me to get into, primarily due to the setting the story takes place in, which is a dystopian world with its own naming system for items and positions of authority, but once I had gotten used to that it was a fascinating read.

This book kicks off more or less just after the events of the first book, and much to my delight, it had a recap at the start to remind you of what had happened. The events that unfold, again centre around Gyre and Maya, and swap between them in each chapter, as they both follow paths that are diametrically opposed, but which will eventually collide in a spectacular manner.

The main characters from the first book all return with the various relationships and interactions between them being explored in more detail and depth, while we also start to learn more about the Ghouls and the Chosen societies.

I found this to be much more immersive and interesting than the first book, while also upping both the tempo at which the story unfolds and the stakes which are being played for by the opposing groups, all the while building to a stunning finale that sets up the last book in the trilogy to be epic.

I could see the plot coming halfway through the book but nevertheless made for a good read. Now to see what Gyre Silvereye and Maya Burningblade does.

Soft DNF at 199 pages.

I don't know if it's just the wrong mood or what, but at the moment the idea of picking this book up and finishing it feels more like a chore than a pleasure. I'm not putting that on the quality of the book--it's still well-written, still has an interesting world, and the characters are still decent.

But at the moment something just makes me not care. I don't care about the mysteries, I don't care about what might happen next, and nothing is pulling me forward.

I'm also finding that there's just something very fetishy about how it seems that every single female character that's been in the book has been either lesbian or bisexual, and they seem to be very horny all the time. Can't put my finger on what it is, but it makes me just oddly uncomfortable. It was actually around the point where that detail became more evident that I started losing interest in continuing. It's like something in the tone shifted in a way that just rubbed me wrong.

So though I hate having another DNF listed, this one unfortunately is joining the current pile. We'll see if my curiosity is piqued enough in the future to pick it up again, but at the moment it's a no from me.

Better than the first book in the series and the author has left his Star Wars template behind. Now Luke, er I mean, Gyre has super powers of his own and can best the super soldiers of the Order. There's a little Scooby gang developing - which is okay. Everyone needs a superscientist, a robot sidekick and an alien advisor if they're going to right wrongs.
Forgive me for my flippancy but this is competently written and enjoyable to read. I am looking forward to the third installment
