Red and the Wolves by Alta Hensley, Zoe Blake

Zoe Blake and Alta Hensley are extremely talented at re-crafting an old tale with a new twist. Plucking the fairytale of Little Red Riding Hood who visits her granny in the forest they instead morph it into a dark tale reminding me a little bit of M. Night Shyamalan's movie, The Village, but push it even further. They upped the ante by adding a paranormal/fantasy level to the classic fairytale with a hearty dose of dark erotica.

Red and the Wolves is not for the faint of heart. I'll be honest, sometimes even the dark moments pushed the boundaries of what I read, but the story itself is excellent and not like anything I've read previously. If you enjoy a good twist on an old tale, especially one that has a Shyamalan feel, then I will let you decide what your own boundaries are.

Long ago five men were cursed, turned into immortal beasts, only so they could protect the village from a dark force, their only payment once a century required a sacrifice.

The blood moon was rising. It was currently time to pay the price.

Red, the unwanted granddaughter of an elder, became that sacrifice to save her village.

Red and the Wolves is such a devilish and erotic twist on the fairy tales that your parents read to you as a child.
I loved this story!

Make no mistake, this is not your childhood fairystory. This is very much a dark romance & may not be to everyone's tastes. The premise is original & interesting with the characters having depth to them. I'll admit to not always being comfortable reading the story & contemplated stopping but I kept going & I ended up really enjoying the relationship that grew between the characters I was surprised at how short the story was though - given the total pages in the book I did expect the story to be longer.

Omg, this book was crazy hot and deliciously dirty. The spin that these ladies put on childhood fairy tales is amazing. Be prepared to be fanning yourself through the entire book and you also may need a cold shower when your done.

I am loving these books. Not your modern day fairy tale by any means. This one is extremely hot and sexy. Red is given as a sacrifice to the wolves. But the wolves are far more than what you think. Holy hold on this book is yummy from beginning to end. It will have you on the edge of your seat wanting so much more. I absolutely loved it. Just a great well written update to a great fairy tale. But so much more than meets the eye. Highly recommend.

Trigger Warnings include:
if noncon/rape/assault is on your no-no list, please don’t read this
mentions of abuse, noncon, dubcon, anal as punishment, punishment with a belt, whipping with a branch as punishment, humiliation as punishment

When Raina is offered up by the village as the sacrifice, life as she knows it drastically changes. And not just because she’s been sacrificed to a pack of wolves. Red starts to see the truth. She, as well as the five members of the pack, discover the lies. When the chance to run arises, Red decides to stay. And be just as protective as the men. They’re still brutal and dangerous predators, but Red discovers the kindness underneath. I was SO unprepared for their kindness, their ability to be gentle. As far as the men in these novellas go, I think these ones may be my favorite.

My Favorite Quotes:
• “Yes, tonight we will most definitely feast.”
• “You will be tainted with my scent from the inside out.”
• “I am about to show you what you truly should be afraid of.”
• “My little sacrifice clearly liked every second of that lashing.”
• “You slayed me far more than any sword could do.”
• “I knew I would claim you. What I didn’t know was how you would claim me as well.”
• “I will let my little Red snatch some pleasure from the jaws of pain.”
• “All the better to eat you with.”
• “The last taste is always the best.”
• “Someone make her scream again as I f!ck her throat.”
• “Ask us to make it hurt.”

I love Zoe Blake’s mafia romances, but this… just no. It was like a low budget porno. The writing wasn’t up to her usual standard and truthfully it was just boring.

The description is very misleading. The writing is rushed. Pretty tame spice. When it isn't the MC getting SA and trauma from it. I know plot isn't important but we are driving a semi through in some places. I am into the concept but thus fell short on way too many levels.

Love the cover!

I enjoyed book much more than the first. I felt like there was more story woven into this one than Snow and the Huntsman.

I liked that we learn about Red's (Raina's) backstory a bit. I found the story of how the men became "wolves" quite interesting. For me this gave them more depth and made it easier to understand their behavior. I liked the brief glimpses of people that surrounded Red before she was chosen to be the sacrifice. To me the sex in this book seemed less brutal than in Snow's story which made it more enjoyable for me. It's still dark and dub con in nature, but I was able to believe the men actually cared about Red. It's wasn't all about what they could take from or do to her.

I really enjoyed the ending of this book, especially Red's actions. Surprisingly, I liked the epilogue which is unusual for me. I'm definitely looking forward to reading the next book.
