Slow

Interesting story. But it seemed quite slow to me, except the death scenes. A little predictable. Not my fav NR Book.

hot ice by nora roberts
oh the places nora takes you to, escape and she does it so very well.
whitney just returns from a jaunt overseas and Doug hops into her car as others are chaing him and shooting with real bullets. they avoid then in the
car but they follow her to her upscale apartment which leads them to steal a car and hightail it to the airport. she wants to accompany him on his hunt for
treasure to madagascar as he owes her money for damages done. he did his homework as she arranged for everything, traveling in first class no less. he had done
extensive traveling, learning how to make food the right way. he was after the treasure.
among their travels they meet up with a tribe that honors their presence as they share what they know of the tribe with one another, legends, customs, etc. the whole
time they are being followed. what an adventure! exotic, intrigue. quite the surprise ending, perfect!

I was invested in the story from the first chase. I love the interaction between the characters, the growth in their relationship as they ran for their lives, and the tidy bow the story was wrapped in. I would read this again.

One of my goals of 2021 is to read at least 2 of my Nora Roberts/J.D. Robb books, I have a lot of them (a little over 100) but have only read a small handful (about 15) and it's been years since I read even 1 of her books. Pretty sure the last one I read was The Obsession and that was a few years ago and I tried to read The Liar sometime in 2019, I think, but I wasn't in the mood for it and set it aside. The reason I have so many of her books, despite only reading a small amount of them, is because I know I like/love this author's work and I know the likelihood of giving at least 4 stars is very high.

However, Hot Ice was one of those rare books of NR that missed the mark. I listened to the audiobook, which was good, I enjoyed the narrator's voice and her narration.

This was so boring. Reading the summary, a career thief is on the run, to both look for treasure and try to get away from people who want him dead, and jumps into this rich woman's car, a rich woman who is craving adventure and jumps at the chance to tag along, it sounds like it's going to be fun. It wasn't fun.

The "romance" wasn't good either. Sometimes when the plot is lacking in whatever way, if the romance is good, I can usually push through and find something entertaining but that wasn't good either. Whitney and Doug had no chemistry. They didn't even like each other and that can work, so many of my favorite pairings start out with the leads not liking each other, but again this didn't have the fun that makes those kinds of pairings entertaining. This had so little romance that I didn't even put this in the contemporary romance category.

Also there were so many things that were repeated. I can't tell you how many times Doug would think back on a previous con and how much sex he had with other rich women who he skillfully robbed.

However, the last hour and a half of the audiobook, this did get a little better. Those last moments where Whitney is
Spoilera prisoner of the guy who's been sending goons after her and Doug and following them, is great. It's the main reason why I gave this 2 starts instead of the 1 it had been for most of the book.

Overall, I wouldn't recommend this, I'd just pass it on by, NR has so many other amazing stories, grab one of those and enjoy.

It was OK, I like Nora Roberts writing style so it wasn’t a bad read. But the story definitely was very dated.
