I really wanted to like this but it was so difficult to get through! The pacing was so off and the entire first half of the book was a total slog. Part two introduced time travel, which got more and more confusing as the story went on.
It was hard to become immersed in this fantasy at all, because there were so many things that took me out of it. The many footnotes brought what was already a slow story to a complete halt every time I stopped to read them, to the point that I just started skipping them. Couldn’t they have just been written into the story itself? Additionally, this was way too heavy-handed on the gender commentary. It was pretty easy to glean in the subtext right from the beginning that this was a man’s world and it’s unfair for the women living in it. I didn’t need it spelled out over and over the way that it was.
I felt pretty strongly that I was going to rate this two stars, but I did really enjoy the ending so I bumped it up to three.

Loved the myths and the characters in the story. Only docking a point because there was a bit of confusion for me about halfway through the book. (If you read it you know why that is.)
Was overall very happy with the book, it left me with an satisfying mood. I enjoyed the writing style a lot and will probably dig into more by this author!

DNF- got to page 90ish and decided it was too YA-y for me
This was fun and fabulous! I should have known Traci Chee would put together something quirky and engaging, since her trilogy 'The Reader' was so damn good back in the day!
A Thousand Steps is interesting, as its definitely inspired by Japanese folklore but is pretty vague on specifics, so it can be a fantastic story for any time. The adventure is great, the characters genuinely endearing, and if you get the audiobook the reader NAILS it.

This was one of the most okay ist books I've read in a while. It was entertaining enough that I read it fast, but I wasn't thoroughly entertained by what I was reading. It was a lot of mindless reading, I suppose.
The first ten chapters grabbed my attention but after that, it fell off when the writing style seemed to become even more juvenile and repetitive than before. Which, maybe, was just me reading into things too much?
I will say that I found the notes at the bottom of some pages insightful and I thought they were a nice addition to the book. I hope more books will do things like it in the future.
The pacing was another thing that I could get behind, it wasn't too fast and it wasn't too slow. Sometimes. It came with rushed portions, but the pacing wasn't my issue.
Somewhat on the topic of plot, I think this was one of the only plot-driven books I've read in a while. Maybe that's why I didn't like it. I wasn't attached to any of the characters.
I feel bad for my next point on why I gave this book the rating I did. I get that this story was supposed to be some kind of "dark feminist story" but the gender commentary had me skimming sections at a time and cringing. It was so superficial and yet attempted to be so philosophical.
The tone of the book often left me confused. The beginning made it seem like it was going to be a bit of a comedy and then just suddenly stopped having characters make humorous remarks or having funny thoughts, which threw me in for a loop.
I feel like I might have to reread this book just in case I somehow missed the point...
