This was a tough lesson. You know the story is harrowing when the gulags are presented as the nicer of two evils.

Absolutely loved this book! I loved the flashbacks of Cilka’s life in Auschwitz. It was so easy to empathize with her. Well done!

Just like every other WW2 era historical fiction, this one broke my heart. It’s unimaginable, the things that people like Cilka went through. To read the horrible atrocities that were committed against so many, and know that it’s not purely a work of fiction is crushing. My main complaint with this particular story though is that the writing didn’t suck me in like the previous work I read by Morris did. Something just seemed to be missing, though I can’t quite put my finger on it. It wasn’t really until the epilogue and all the info that came after that I felt myself fully immersed. Still, this book really got to me, and had me feeling all the things.

I've had this hardback copy on my shelf for ages and surprise . I decided to listen to the audio version instead! 🤣
Cilka's Journey is harrowing and heartbreaking.
We meet Cilka briefly in the story The Tattooist of Auschwitz, and we are all worried about her character wanting to know what happened to her.
Here is her tale of being held prisoner for the three years from the age of 16-19, her body being used and abused daily by the officers there to being punished for this action and sent to 15 years at another camp for her crime of prostitution.
This poor girl holds her head high as she supports Jossie, a 16 year old girl and all the other women back at her sleeping quarters. The women work hard to survive and are also abused daily. Cilka does her best to get the women extra rassions and protection where she can, we see the horrendous hardship these women face on a daily basis and the strength that Cilka displays to help others by training to be a nurse on site and then first hand at the mines.
Cilka isn't afraid of death she is a survivor.
I enjoyed following Cilka's journey even though I found it sad and upsetting. Her inner strength and hope were very powerful, and her story is something that should not be dismissed.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ from me! 🤓
⚠️ reference to rape, physical humiliation, death, and neglect.
