got this off a read-aloud hit list - story is pretty creative, good in an educational predictive way, except I don't like the unrealistic dinosaur/fossil/etc turn. not super in love with the illustrations either.

Really cute story about what is inside of an egg. The kids really enjoyed guessing.

The picture remind me a bit of some of Mo Willems book. Simple, yet imaginative story.

Which came first, the snake, the lizard, the dinosaur, or the egg? That's not exactly the gist of this creative picture book, but it's the meta-topic. Basically a two page spread shows something but you turn the page and find out that what you thought was happening would be true "except if" something different were true (as revealed on the following pages). It's good to teach kids the meaning of the letters "except if," which appear on almost every page. However, if the reader has any sort of trouble with reading left to right (which I do), the eye might be drawn to the "except if" part on the right page before reading the the left page. So, it's good for some early literacy practice, but not so good for that whole "left to right" thing the West is so fond of.

This looks like a good candidate for storytime - nice, clear pictures and a chance for the kids to help me read with each page of "except if" :)

I’m a huge fan of children’s books that are all about “what if’s” and in this case, “except ifs.” There’s nothing better than reading a book out loud and having my son guess what’s going to be on the next page. Except If does exactly this. Bright and simple illustrations morph into the next form. Simple and appealing to young readers.

Loved the progressive building, this would be a great story pattern to use in the classroom.

This story was a big hit with Toddler Monkey, because it coincidentally features one of her new favorite words "except" (though she likes to say "except of" instead of "except if," as in, "Everyone loves spinach, except of me!") The book reads as a kind of exploration of the imagination. What could possibly come out of an egg? What might this snake also look like? The book also includes a dinosaur and fossils, which are a topic of great fascination right now. "What happened to the dinosaurs? What is the fossil?" The only source of confusion for my toddler is that the book doesn't look like the bones we've seen in the museum. I guess it's more of an impression kind of fossil. In any case, I already had to read this book about a million times the first week we got it.

Note: I received a free copy of this book directly from the publisher.

An egg, a bird, a lizard, a dinosaur, a fossil, a new bird.
