a solid Gothic thriller. More intrigued by the story around Charles' "the Damned" book which did actually publish in the late 1800s/ early 1900s. I loved the fact that this book was inspired by his wife, an oftentimes overlooked figure in literary history. Narration style and writing style nothing special to write home about, but the slight character descriptions as well as the setting on the island and Mr. Arkels home and dolls is quite good.

Discovering this entire novel was a wild fantasy about real life people was kind of a punch to the gut. I don't think I would have read the book actually if I knew that; I hate fanfiction about actual human beings. (There is also no speculative element if you're looking for something supernatural in your gothic.)

I wanted to strangle pretty much every character at some point or another, but not necessarily in a bad way? There was nice depth to the characters, just lots of period-appropriate attitudes toward certain things that made me infuriated, sometimes at a certain character and sometimes on another’s behalf

It was a very quick read with interesting repetition to build tension

Got an ARC through my job at a public library
