As I read this book, I hate it more and more. Tongueless, Seraphina, Cassius, Orion, Dancer, Daxo deaths seemed insignificant/pointless/rushed. The plot felt too macrocosmic, so I picked up on very little immersion and character development as the reader. It just kept increasing, too, with Fa being introduced. There is no relief in the plot as it continues to expand. This should definitely have been two smaller books or something.
Victra's tantrum is overplayed. Lyria was thrown out from "main character" status while Ephraim suddenly gained it. I wish the focus could be more on Pax than Emphraim because it would set up an excellent sequel of Pax and Lysander. I like Lysander's perspective a lot.
I liked the battle of Mercury, but the plot slowed down way too much afterward. Battle of Mercury maybe should have been the end of Iron Gold rather than beginning of Dark Age.
The violence/gruesomeness of the series reached a new, totally unnecessary peak in Iron Gold and especially Dark Age. It makes me want to stop reading the series even though I love the universe and characters. This is a major negative for me. The wolf, Vox mobbing and ensuing executions, and Ulysses were all excessively gross scenes which ultimately harmed the quality of the book.
I honestly like Lyria, Volga, and Ephraim's half of the story as much as Darrow and Virginia's. Lilath being the queen of the Syndicate is cool, but brining back the Jackal as a clone is awful and definitely a grab for more gruesomeness in the book.

After the very rough middle section, the book picks up and "returns" to what Red Rising is. I am happier with the story in the later parts of the book. The reveal that Fa is Ragnar's father is wild. I like this because it ties Fa in rather than leaving him as a random new part of the story. Sefi's death was what I expected given the Obsidian culture, and Ephraim's death was respectable.
I loved the battle of Heliopsis. Even though it was hopeless for Darrow and the Free Legions, it was excellently written and immersive.
After the Bleeding Place (which was an awesome scene), I knew Cassius wasn't dead!!! I knew it! Even though the deaths I mentioned before felt so flat and insignificant, I knew Cassius wouldn't die like it was portrayed.
I am interested in Lysander's outcome from the choices he has made toward the end of the book.
Overall, this book is still part of the awesome series of Red Rising, but I wish it didn't have the particularly disturbing scenes in it. It covers a lot of different perspectives all over the solar system which help build the complexity and depth of the Red Rising universe. The combat was written very well, and the story captures my interest completely.
In reality, I wish I could rate the book both 0.5 stars and 4.5 stars because of how it swung so much.
