My brain is frazzled with the amount of place names, characters, and battle scenes I’ve just digested - I definitely switched off at times.
But this dark and gruesome novel from Brown demonstrates the harsh reality of just how much conflict remains following a ‘triumph’ and how changes which are seemingly for the better can still have terrible consequences. It begs the question; ca those fighting for a better world, for equality, stay morally good, or must they become as dark and as violent as those they fight against? This book certainly gives the reader a lot to think about.
I’m sad that characters I once loved feel more and more alien, but the character arcs are intricate and complex and make sense, and are ultimately interesting to follow.
I look forward to reading the next one, and hope to god that we will somehow start to make our way back out of these depressing trenches.

The best written piece in the series so far. All character arcs were interesting and fun following the twists and turns. Lysander's character development, along with Ephraim's were my favorite writing in the series, even more than Darrow. I was feeling iffy on whether I may continue the series, but this book changed my mind. Will continue and trust the author to bring us home.
