I have no idea why I had such a blocker on this book.
I got 90% of the way through it two years ago in just a few days, but I was borrowing it from my parents’ library and had to send it back, and I got busy and wasn’t in a hurry to hurt myself more so I waited a long time to get back to it. Re-reading, though, knowing all the horrible things that were coming, was torturous. I eventually had to start skimming just so I could get through the stuff I mostly remembered without burning out, which is abnormal for me.
I don’t think it’s any flaw with the writing or story. Brown delivers another gut punch-laden, tightly constructed story of human determination, evil, love, and war. But it’s also unrelentingly brutal, which I have limited tolerance for. Looking forward to Lightbringer.

There were some times that I wasn't sure if I had the strength to carry on. This book is incredible. It built so much depth into this world and its characters.
