oh my fucking god. this was SO GOOD what the hell. i fought for my life to get into this one (my fault, not the book's fault) and then that last 20% was exhilarating.

I enjoyed this one more than I had expected to based on the opening. (I think part of that was getting used to Doctor Sheppard as narrator, and meeting a new cast of side characters.) As it turns out, though, I liked it probably as much as another other Poirot story I've read so far. There were a lot of distractions and misdirections, and many of the supporting characters grew on me over the course of the story. I feel like I should have seen the denouement coming, but I must confess that it took me by surprise.

One side note: there is the usual minor racism that I have come to expect in books of this era, but for some reason the Mahjong scene really rubbed me the wrong way.

This is my first time reading Christie and it was surprisingly fun. I have been told that Agatha Christie disliked writing Hercule Poirot but I certainly didn't see any of that in the story. Poirot was surprisingly funny, the suspects sufficiently suspicious, the mystery was mysterious.

Despite knowing the twist (who doesn't at this point), reading along and trying to figure out the why, the how, and spotting the little hints was great fun.

The book loses .25 of a star for period typical stuff. There's some now known as offensive language used to describe neural-atypical people and people native to Africa. While I accept that the times were different and I don't think older books should be censored or re-edited for modern audiences I DO feel like a modern reader should see and recognize the problematic elements in a classic text.

Anyways, would recommend and would read another Agatha Christie.

that was good. at first i suspected
flora and blunt, and then slightly before the end i suspected the actual murderer, shepherd. i realised it was wierd that the book was written in first person when none of christie’s other books are. also, somewhere around page 230, poirot said something about all the suspects and shepherd was not one of them. that was interesting because i thought he would be an obvious suspect. i read this book because my mother guessed the ending when she was a child. i was on the verge of guessing it but didn’t. i did suspect him for a hot minute. also, the fact that the dictaphone read out the dead man’s voice was quite creepy!
.
it’s not like her other murder books! wow
