It’s hard to put into words how I feel about this book. It is sweet and sad but also horrific and terrible. History, unfortunately, is too often told by victors. I learned so much about Palestine and the Palestinian people. I am so grateful to Amiry for telling this story.

A love story of two people, as well as a love letter to a place: Palestine. We get an excellent education in the events leading up to and beyond the Nakba (catastrophe) of 1948 that resulted in the death and displacement of indigenous Palestinians. Amiry does a particularly good job of illustrating the impossible choices nearly every Palestinian had to make, and the fall-out from those various choices.
Moderate: War, Death, and Abandonment

This is the first book I have read that takes place in Palestine during the 1948 conflict. The way that Amiry writes these characters, the tragedies that befall them, and ties it into her own experience as a child of Palestine is seriously moving. I picked this up and finished within 24 hours.
