It was 55% mystery/suspense, 45% Romance for me. Mystery/suspense-wise, it didn't hold my attention that much probably because I spoiled myself when I googled "Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco ". Nahagip ng mata ko sino yung Ripper. And yung reveal, medyo meh. Like, yun na yun? Kfine. Also, may similarity sa story ni Frankenstein. Which was my 4-star read prior to this!

What I surprisingly liked here is Thomas. Kuhang kuha mo ang kilig ko beh! šŸ˜ dahil dyan, 4āļø! The romance sub-plot is giving me a Bridgerton vibes. Yung kiss sa cheeks, kenekeleg na ang anteh nyo. šŸ˜‚

Tho medyo contradicting lang yung character ni Audrey Rose kasi she wanted to study forensics and even applied as apprentice of his uncle pero kapag nakalatag na yung bangkay or yung i-o-autopsy nila, forda suka and himatay si atashi. Parang may mali sa'yo ate gurl? Sure ka dyan sa forensic medicine na gusto mo? šŸ˜… not for the faint-hearted dapat yan sizzz.

I understand medyo may konting differences lang on the real Jack the Ripper and the untold stories of his victims (which made me want to look for that book). Still, I enjoyed the story and the ending. I'll definitely read the book 2.

I enjoyed this book a lot more because someone annotated it for me. However I will say that Audrey's bs at the end of the book really ruined it for me. I don't care how much you love someone, if they're out cutting women up then it is your responsibility to turn them in and face justice. Not let them go free with a slap on the wrist and "don't do that again, u naughty boy u" like girl bffr. She also gave hella pick me energy "I'm not like other girls, I like blood and gore and hate tea parties"
I LOVED Thomas, though his deduction bullshit was a bit of a stretch sometimes. He made things just a little more lighthearted and got a laugh out of me a few times
Overall not a bad book

First, a rant about the mc and then Iā€™ll tell yā€™all how great this book is. I think she was insufferable at times. Iā€™m not sure if this was the authors intention or not, but I found myself hating her point of view a couple times in the story. I am completely all for powerful women, but Audrey seemed to consider herself smarter and morally higher than everyone else in the story. Maybe pride is intentionally her main flaw, but I couldnā€™t stand it most of the time. She often ignored the adults in her life in the name of feminism to do absolutely stupid things because she believes herself, a 17 year old teen, above death and injury. This does get better as the series moves forward though. I did enjoy the plot and will be reading the next in the series. The characters were worth rooting for for the most part, and I didnā€™t see most of the main twists coming.

This fictionalization of the infamous Jack the Ripper murders stars Audrey Rose Wadsworth, a young lady yet to make her society debut who prefers apprenticing in autopsies with her uncle to attending teas and such as young ladies of the time ā€œshouldā€ do. In doing so she meets Thomas Cresswell, a handsome but arrogant student of her uncleā€™s who also apprentices for him. The pair immerse themselves deeply in the crimes to help stop the vicious killer and they canā€™t seem to stay apart from each other. They chase clues and face setbacks together, sharing theories and ensuring her uncle isnā€™t executed after being falsely accused of the crimes, but perhaps the real killer is still someone close to her.

The book is well paced and I appreciate that Audrey Rose doesnā€™t fall too deeply into the ā€œnot like other girlsā€ trap. Despite her drive toward macabre science, she still enjoys fine dresses and makeup like her peers, though she does find it hard to relate to their lack of drive toward being more than a future wife. I wish weā€™d gotten to see more interaction with her cousin Liza; I think she could use a positive female presence on her side given the heavy male influence around her.

Like many mysteries, the characters donā€™t get a lot of development. The greatest changes here are shown only in how Audrey Rose and Thomasā€™s dynamic shifts to be more like partners than adversaries. I hope thereā€™s more personal growth in the next book but Iā€™m not holding my breath for it.

The ending does go a bit off the rails but in a fun way. The real killer is
Audrey Roseā€™s brother Nathaniel. She followed much evidence proclaiming her father as the killer but in truth her brother became obsessed with bringing their mother back to life in some kind of Frankenstein style experiment. This is why he was killing and harvesting organs of women who he saw as being worthless to society.
The reveal could have played out longer and the change of heart setting up the next book felt a little heavy handed.

I read the authors note at the end that explains some of the inaccuracies included, and Iā€™m (slightly) less bothered by them with these explanations.

The two main characters were still insufferable. If I hear ā€œnot the kind of girlā€ one more time I will scream.

It was a fun read though, even if the twist wasnā€™t entirely surprising.
