while the book was very thrilling and I enjoyed it, I feel like a lot of aspects were woven in and then just forgotten about/never explained fully? idk whether that will be picked up on in following books though.

I don't think it needed the lovestory, really, but I guess it can't be avoided

I guessed the plot twist in the first quarter of the book, but then I reminded myself this is a book for young adult readers. It was really annoying for me, as a social worker, to have the protagonist and the authors note at the end embellish the fact that the victims were daughters, mothers, sisters, etc because I think their personhood isn’t contingent upon relation to others but that’s a me problem. I can appreciate a female protagonist who is tough and feminine but the author doesn’t seem to understand the show don’t tell concept. Audrey Rose said it several times throughout the book. Took me a long time to get through because it moved slowly and got boring but I could understand why people liked it. Just not for me and I don’t think I’ll read more of the series.

I read this with my book club, and I’m glad that I did. I enjoyed the witty banter between Audrey Rose and Thomas, with me wanting to simultaneously whack Thomas and giggling at the things he said! I also enjoyed that our main character went against societal norms, but did not reject all things considered ‘proper’. We were presented with a well-rounded and realistic character that was easy to connect with. I felt all of the pain and anger that she experienced at the world that was just trying to make a housewife out of her.

I did, however, see the twist coming, and while the book was still well written, I was hoping to be surprised by a devastating turn of events.

I’ve always been interested in Jack the Ripper and the hold he had over London so this book was definitely interesting, and I loved the inclusion of images at the beginning of different chapters. Overall, this was a great pick for my book club, and I can see myself reading the next book in the series, though it is not at the top of my list.
