Loved the banter between Thomas and Audrey Rose, hope to see more of that in the future books!
Did see the ending coming a bit, so was not that blown away…

I was really hoping to love this book as I have heard so much about it. It seemed the type of story that I would enjoy, but it had a few faults. First, the story was S L O W. I did not pick it up for weeks on end because I could not focus on it. Only halfway through the book did I become interested. The end was very entertaining and shocking. I did pick up on it a few chapters before it was announced, but I was still surprised with the reasonings and other happenings. I felt some things added were not helpful to the story and just were filler, which made me enjoy it less. I would give the ending four stars, but since I am rating the whole book I would give it three.

(No-spoilers) I loved the Victorian sitting! I want to take a time machine and travel back there now. I loved the mystery of who was Jack the ripper. I always found interesting unsolve case of serial killers and stuff like that so I enjoyed seeing Kerri Maniscalco takes on it. I also really liked her writing style.

Audrey Rose was an amazing character! I love how she was feminine but at the same time badass and so intelligent. Her ambition to take her place in this world was well done. Now into my new bookboyfriend, Thomas Cresswell. Where to start? I’m in love with him. He was so cocky, arrogant & funny, plus kind of a bad boy. I just love him okay? Furthermore I really liked his relationship with Audrey and may have screamed and smiled like an idiot at the book for how cute they were.

I will say I felt like there were pieces missing in some part of the plot and I was bumped that I figured out who was Jack the ripper within 100 pages of the book. But these didn’t really deem my enjoyment overall.

The fact that I managed to finish this book at all says something I guess...
this book was very boring and predictable. I forced myself to read it but it took me 6 days to read it because I kept falling asleep every time I would pick it up. I picked out who the killer was from the beginning, I had it down to 2 people and one of them was it.
I will not be continuing with this series and I will be giving this book back to the store. I do not plan to keep it because I hated this book

I’m hovering around 3.5 stars… There were some historical and medical inaccuracies that irked me. Some other reviews point out in more detail that while there is a creative license disclaimer at the end of the book, there were issues that could have been avoided.
As an avid lover of sewing and historical fashion, my personal peeve was the incessant complaint about uncomfy corsets, which is totally inaccurate. That’s one fallacy that is SO annoyingly repeated and it’s a tired trope.

Otherwise, I did find the setting and story compelling. I didn’t LOVE the characters but I really appreciated that there was growth present in multiple persons. I think some of the problems others had with the MC is due to the author’s effort to balance a forward-thinking character with the incredibly restrictive and often ridiculous societal norms found in the 19th century. I personally thought Kerri did a decent job trying to find a medium. No, Wadsworth wasn’t ~the most feminist~ but she’s decently rounded considering the backdrop.
I think my biggest win was that while there is a romance, it takes a back-burner and is not the focus of the book.

Overall not my favourite series but I enjoyed it enough and congratulate the author of her debut.
