It was so amazing! Until the last 80 pages. So well written and such a beautiful language. Capturing the atmosphere so incredible you’re brought along through northern africa.
If only the novel would have ended where it should. That long tragic ending just brought a tart dark feeling to a book that had given all my tastebuds an exercise in amazement. It just felt undeserving and unimaginative.
But higly recommendable for the most part.

This book was on so many "Top 100" and "Best of..." lists that I decided to read it. The writing was wonderful and the themes were interesting. The characters, however, were all unlikable and I had a hard time staying engaged. I had a particularly difficult time reading anything having to do with Kit. Even taking the time period of when the book was written into consideration, it was hard to believe that this woman would have made the choices (especially in the last third of the book) that she did.

I just couldn't identify with the characters. As a result, their existential angst in Northern Africa just felt annoying.
