“Destiny is usually just around the corner. Like a thief, a hooker, or a lottery vendor: its three most common personifications. But what destiny does not do is home visits. You have to go for it.”

Finally read this book. Started reading it back in 2007. I only got about 75 pages in and decided it was not for me. Picked it up again and decided to give it more of a chance to draw me in, especially since so many people have recommended it. I am glad I did. I enjoyed the story. Well worth giving it another go.

I have started and stopped reading it maybe as many times as years I've had it. I typically gravitate towards more fantasy and science fiction, but absolutely adored this book. Written in such beautiful prose, a real love letter to literature and Barcelona, this book is a wonderful read, which had me reading into the early hours of the day. Equal parts mystery and melodrama, it is a great read that I will be thinking about for quite a time to come.
