Reading Virginia Andrews' books when I was 15, they were kind of exciting. Reading them at 25, they were not.

Flowers in the Attic and the subsequent series were some of my favourite books to read during my teen years, and after being given a pile of books from a friend recently which included the Landry series I was looking forward to starting them. Unfortunately I was sorely disappointed. The writing style is simplistic, the description is nothing more than a list of features and the plot is tired.

I've been informed that all of Andrews' books feature this beautiful, hard done by girl, experiencing forbidden love then finding out she is part of a rich powerful family formula, but there's only so many times you can read about a girl falling in love with her brother. The first time it's an interesting taboo. The second time it's one big yawn.

My favorite of the VC Andrews series. Ruby is a character I will never forget, what she went through was horrifying!

When I read these novels back in the day I would have given them 3-3.5 STARS and now would say about one Star

I started reading VC Andrews books in the 1991 and stopped about 2003.

I have read:
-Dollanganger Series
-Casteel Series
-Cutler Series
-Landry Series
-Logan Series
-Orphans Series
-Wildflowers Series
-Hudson Series
-Shooting Stars Series
-DeBeers Series
-Broken Wings Series

As a preteen reading these novels was a rebellion and the gothic theme also seemed cool. I stopped reading this author because the novelty wore off, the novels are too formulaic that I could not tell one book from another and gothic aspect was lost.

As with other VC Andrews novels, Ruby contains beautiful prose, a captivating story, and some serious WTF moments, including but not limited to incest, an attempted arranged teen marriage, voodoo, and a drive through the Storytown sex shops (mind you, the timeline of this book is the early 1960s). But what else would you expect from a VC Andrews book? Haha.

I didn’t like Ruby as a narrator or main character, and I think that’s mainly why I didn’t click with the novel. I found her to be fairly one-dimensional; sweet, innocent, and way too trusting. Yes, she came to New Orleans naïve to the lifestyle and the people, but it seemed that every chapter, someone had pulled a fast one on Ruby. Yet she consistently kept trusting Giselle, her friends, and Daphne. I just think that at some point, she should have grown a spine, for lack of a better term.
