I thought this was more helpful than Expecting Better, but that could very well be because the subject matter was more how to succeed than how not to fail.
4⭐️ a good data driven book to start my parenting book journey with!

DNF about 70% through because we had our baby and I realized that this book had not actually helped or prepared me. This is a collection of pretty weak analyses of a hodge-podge of topics; each chapter picks a topic and goes through a few related studies and pretty much every time has to explain why the study isn't perfect and why we can't draw final conclusions - spoken like a true economist writing a book about parenting.
In fact, the author is no more an expert on any of the subjects than someone who has googled a few articles, and therefore doesn't have the confidence to make actual recommendations.
I really wanted to be as prepared as I could to be a dad. I read three books about parenting, but found myself looking up such basics as changing a diaper and how to hold a baby while we were in the hospital. I think the books were helpful for my general mental preparation so I don't regret reading them, but ultimately caring for a newborn is just better learned by talking to and watching your mom and mother-in-law than reading a book. My takeaway is that not much can really prepare you for a wailing baby at 3am night after night other than loving your spouse and being used to working together on hard things.

Extremely useful if a bit repetitive. Excellent preventative vaccine for the parenting wars.
