The Book of Salt is a beautiful book, set in Paris and told by the Vietnamese cook to Alice B. Toklas and Gertrude Stein. The writing is captivating and the story is poignant. By the end I loved and appreciated the main character. If you pick it up and it seems a bit slow, stick with it. It's so worth it for the language and the magic that comes out of the story.

This book is interesting and has a lot of potential with depicting queer people, especially queer people of color, in this specific time in history. I just... didn't find myself getting super into it. I'm not sure why, and I wish I enjoyed it more than I did. I honestly think it may be in part because I had to read it very fast for a class.

My class was studying Gertrude Stein's work at the same time, and it made for some interesting discussions in comparisons of writing.

Disappointing. The cover, blurb and reviews promised a much better story. I never really worked out where this was going.

Reading this book was like limping through a beautiful forest. Although the writing was poetic, it bordered on masturbatory. Seriously: is there a story anywhere in here? I've been reading this book for three months and have yet to find a story. I give up.

If I were a collector of lovely quotes from books, this book would have many. I often thought “That was a good line” while I read. The prose is lyrical and delightful. However, the structure of the story is lacking - or maybe nonexistent, meandering, dreamlike. It made it hard to dig in, despite the pretty surface.
