Something holding back both this book and it's predecessor is

ostensibly life-and-death moments for major characters being cheapened by the fact that said characters continually (and often miraculously) survive.

As these moments typically occur at the conclusion of the story, the last impression of the narrative is a sour one. Once again in this series we have a book with truly spellbinding moments undercut by a weak resolution.

Didnt enjoy as much as the first - dragged a little bit with lots of plotting. Still great to be back in the world and can’t wait to start the 3rd
