First Asterix book. I read a fair number of these as a kid. This one is like watching a tv sitcom pilot... mostly setup and introduction, and not really as much fun as what follows.

C'est encore trop drôle et ça me fait retomber très rapidement en enfance, en fait un classique indémodable.

Full disclosure, I grew up on this series so my opinion is necessarily biased.

I'm of the view that there is no such thing as a bad Asterix book ... but some volumes, like this one, are just okay.

As a child, I rarely borrowed this one from the library, which I attribute to the art being rougher than it is in later volumes. As an adult, this is still a volume I rarely reach for. That said, the story in this volume is fine, just not my favourite.

Would I recommend a new reader start with this volume, since it's the first one written? Actually, no. A better place to start would be with a more popular volume like [b:Asterix and Cleopatra|122410|Asterix and Cleopatra (Asterix, #6)|René Goscinny|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1415586971l/122410._SX50_.jpg|230588]. Then, if one's interest is piqued, go back to where it all started.

Summer Reading challenge : Past Love - Reread a book you loved when you were younger

I loved Asterix Comics when I was younger and I bought a few of them a few years ago because they were a comfort to me. I love the adventurous that they go on and how they torment the Romans. Now that I'm older I have a better appreciation for some of the names - GetaFix?! Hilarious now, totally went over my head as a child

One of my favourite comic series of all time. This series really increased my love of history. Like the Tintin reread I'm doing I will also endeavour to read all the Asterix books once again.

Unlike Tintin the early Asterix comics are much more accessible. There is no blatant racism. It's just a fun little adventure. The first book is just an introduction to the main characters and their abilities.

I can't wait to get through the rest of the series.

Nice to revisit one of the texts many a teacher used to help teach me French. I will rember to bring adictionary with me the next time to look up the more difficult vocabulary.
