This book was recommended to me in the reviews of Ready Player One as, "Well if you liked this book, you'll love the source material: Neuromancer." I did not love Neuromancer. But it grew on me.

I am someone whose childhood thrived on cyberpunk. I even own Orson Scott Card's anthology "Maps in the Mirror" specifically because it contains his cyberpunk short stories. I convinced a Dystopian Fiction professor in college to let me write my term paper on cyberpunk, despite it not being on the approved reading list - correllary: cyberpunk is dystopian fiction. So it wasn't the cyberpunkiness of this book which got me, it was the heavy reliance on gratuitous sex and extensive drug use. A little bit to set the atmosphere would be nice, but the amount that was included just screamed, "I don't think my story will be popular on its own so I'm going to throw in some attractant to bring the boys to the yard." The story would have been just fine without the unnecessary distractions of detailed casual sex and drug use, and more dignified, too.

And then the plot-un-advancing incest and for why? We get it that
Ashpool is a depraved old man
, but there's no need to have him boast of incestuous relationships much less have one out on graphic display.

Perhaps I'm just not the audience for this. Perhaps the audience for this finds it temptingly salacious, while I find it boorish.

Anyway, good cyberpunk story wrapped in hedonistic depravity. If you are here for both, you'll love the book. If you are here for either on their own, you'll enjoy the book.

Nonsequetir: Love that I found the inception kernel of Johnny Mneumonic in this novel. See if you can, too!
