I can't stand this book. It had so much potential! Seeker could have been a great fantasy novel that readers of Graceling would have adored, but instead it fell short of all my expectations.
One of the biggest problems for me was the discrepancies in the characters. One of the first sentences in the book is that Quin felt Alistair truly meant to kill her, yet a few chapters later Quin was admiring him. This is one example out of many that particularly annoyed me.
I still don't understand why the characters Shinobu and Quin were "sort of but not really" related. Why have them be cousins at all if you're going to have a weird incest love triangle. If John was from a different Seeker family why couldnt Shinobu as well? ALso, Alistair should distain for the acts Briac was making SHinobu and Quin perform, yet he still went on with it and dared to be sorry about it?
So, while everything about this book angered me I still think the plot was interesting. The characters were also interesting and the only one I really truly liked was the Young Dread or Maud. I want to say so much more, but I don't want to have spoilers.

This book started out with a lot of promise, but it sadly fell very short.
The world-building is a mess. It’s set in old-time Scotland yet there’s time travel to the future and hopping continents. They speak French, they go to futuristic Hong Kong, there’s steam punk elements, the main character ends up falling in love with her half 3rd cousin (I don’t care who you are, if you can literally trace the lineage of how you’re related to your significant other, that is disgusting), not to mention the logic is all over the place.
Seekers are supposed to be good (we don’t know what they do, though) but it turns out they’re bad (and we don’t know why). None of this is explained. Ever.
Then, something catastrophic happens to the main character where she forgets her memory, but what ever it is that takes place is just called “the event”. Not to mention this “event” would have been very informational to what Seekers were, but no...we don’t find out what that event was. The character just refer to it as something like “after the event”.
All in all, I am not doing the array of shortcomings justice, but all that needs to be said is that this was a big disappointment.

Wow. This book was amazing. The timing and plot and back stories could at time be hard to follow and somewhat clutter-feeling, but overall it was a good book. I've read a lot of bad reviews about this book, but I can't see why. I could NOT put this book down for anything at all. I would almost stop reading and then get pulled right back in. Quin wasn't my favorite protagonist ever, but she wasn't too bad. Shinobu would hands down have to be my favorite. His story is so amazing. I love everything he has to overcome, from his dad, the drugs, the attempted suicide, being in love with who he considers family (although they ARE NOT REALLY RELATED). I am so happy he got his happy ending at the end of this book. It makes my heart smile everytime Quin says that he's the other half of her soul and means it in a literal sense, seeing as they were raised together. I cannot wait to dive into Traveler. I am so excited! I couldn't stop smiling after I finished Seeker. Tyrants and evildoers... beware.
I hate it when books like this say that this is the new series for people that like Divergent and the Hunger Games. Do not be fooled. I strongly do not recommend this book. This, by far, is the worst story I have ever read on Goodreads. It is not worth 8 dollars. If anything, it should be free.
The characters are not relatable. At all. None of them are likeable. The world is not well developed and the author broke some of her rules. A lot of the things do not make sense and I have to force myself not to question it. It should not be compared to Divergent or the Hunger Games. I am very disappointed.

Exceptionally well written, gritty and action-packed. I can't explain the DNF reviews, except it seems that the majority of those reviewers were expecting a fantasy novel (blame the jacket blurb). If you read all the way through to the very end, then you know this is sci-fi - set in a universe just a few tics away from our own. It made me think more of Phillip K Dick than George RR Martin, which seems to be what some people were expecting. Picture the Hong Kong-esque settlements in Firefly. In fact, I spent the entire time thinking this would make a fabulous, dark, dirty and bleak TV series. My only complaint is that the characters were too young at the beginning of the novel, but that's resolved quickly. And the audiobook narration is top-notch.

I received a copy of this book to review. DNF which even in terrible books I at least finish to find out what happens (50 shades anyone) I normally blow through books but this one just didn't keep me coming back like I was hoping it would. It doesn't build on characters and the storyline is even weaker. You get roped into a chapter and then realize it's over in three pages, and right at the climax of what is happening. There are too many points of view in this book which is another reason you couldn't get to know the characters better.
I honestly think this book could have been an awesome story but it was all over the place and missing too much.

El libro trata sobre los Seekers, que son personas que durante siglos han protegido a los humanos de los criminales, pero a lo largo de los años, las familias que los componían han ido desapareciendo hasta que solo han quedado tres, por lo que se ve en el libro. Ahora es el turno de Quin, John y Shinobu, en ellos recae la responsabilidad, para ellos es un honor ser un Seeker. John sabe que no va a convertirse en uno por culpa del padre de Quin. Shinobu y Quin cuando se convierten en Seeker se dan cuenta de que no es lo que ellos pensaban. A lo largo de los siglos y años, los Seekers se han ido corrompiendo por el poder que tenían y sumando el mundo en la oscuridad.
La habilidad de los Seekers es saltar en el espacio tiempo, es decir, pueden moverse por el mundo gracias a un objeto, transportándose de un lugar a otro en cuestión de segundos. La acción se desarrolla, al principio en Escocia, y más tarde en Hong Kong y Londres. Cuando John se marcha del hogar de Quin, unos días más tarde, el hogar de Quin es atacado, y Shinobu y Quin huyen, pero Quin es herida, y por culpa de eso todos sus recuerdos se desvanecen. Los dos dejan de ser Seekers hasta que la situación los obliga a volver a ser Seeker. Aparte de los tres protagonistas, también hay una chica llamada Maud, quien es también narradora, también. Ella es una Dread, los Dreads se suponen que tienen que hacer cumplir y respetar las leyes de los Seekers a estos mismos, pero hasta los Dreads se han sumido en la oscuridad
El libro está compuesto por tres partes y un interludio. En la primera parte, se ve claramente las ideas de la escritora y lo que quiere explicar, pero no está bien desarrollado. ¿A qué me refiero? Me refiero a que sus ideas están desperdigadas por todo el libro. En esa parte ocurre prácticamente todo, la escritora lo que nos quiere dar es un acercamiento hacia los personajes y su ambientación, a mí me parece esta parte muy rápida, con mucha información y mal desarrollada. Pero desde mi punto de vista, es la parte que más me ha gustado, es donde he visto realmente lo que quería decir la escritora y cuáles eran sus ideas. En el interludio nos lleva al pasado de los cuatro personajes, en el que te explica sobretodo la historia de Maud y de John, y es ahí donde vemos la idea principal de la escritora. La segunda y tercera parte son las que menos me han gustado, se centran más en Quin y Shinobu, que es donde vemos por lo que van a luchar; la tercera parte es el desenlace, en el que nos deja con un final abierto para leer el segundo libro Traveler.
La pluma de la escritora es un poco rara, no se enrolla en las descripciones, es un poco simple, ha ido saltando de un suceso a otro, haciendo que te pierdas y no sepas por donde vas, ya que de un capítulo al siguiente pasan cosas totalmente diferentes e independientes. La escritora quiere contar muchas cosas, quiere narrar demasiados sucesos, y esos sucesos se lían entre sí y ya no sabes qué es lo que estás leyendo. A mí me ha pasado que he tenido que leerme una cuantas páginas de nuevo porque había cosas que me dejaban muy fuera de lugar.
En lo referente a los personajes, mi personaje favorito es John y Maud. En John podemos ver a lo largo del libro que evoluciona como suelen evolucionar los personajes de cualquier libro, Quin y Shinobu no evolucionan así, hay un corte en medio que hace que evolucionen automáticamente, es decir, que son personas totalmente diferentes, como si no fueran los mismos personajes y fuesen otros. Maud es el personaje que evoluciona más y mejor a lo largo de todo el libro, en el que vemos como su mente evoluciona a una más madura.
Lo que me gusta de este libro es la idea de la escritora, cuando te terminas la primera parte te das cuenta de cuál es la idea principal, pero al estar muy mal desarrollado y que te salta de un suceso a otro sin explicación, hace que te desagrade el libro.
En conclusión, el libro tiene una idea bastante buena, pero al no desarrollarse bien no se ha hecho notar lo suficiente. Es un libro que no te deja las cosas claras. Pero he pensado en darle una oportunidad, porque, francamente, la idea me gusta mucho, y me gustaría saber cómo termina la historia. Solo espero que el segundo libro Traveler no sea como este y tenga las ideas claras.

Seeker is een van die zeer gehypte boeken. Het werd vergeleken met de Game of Thrones en de Hungergames. Ik kwam hem werkelijk overal tegen en op een gegeven moment voelde ik me haast verplicht om hem te lezen. En als je tegen mij zegt dat iets moet… precies dan doe ik het tegenovergestelde! Want ondanks de hele coole cover voelde dit boek niet aan als iets dat mij zou bevallen. Ik zou het dan ook niet opgepakt hebben, ware het niet voor het YALFEST en mijn doel om van alle auteurs die kwamen minstens een boek te lezen. Aangezien Arwen Elys Dayton ook kwam… besloot ik maar eens te gaan uitvinden of dit boek de hype waard is of niet!
Dat was het helaas niet. Seeker was langdradig, op sommige momenten zelfs saai en een ware beproeving om te blijven lezen. Oké, van tevoren waren mijn verwachtingen niet al te hoog, maar dit had ik niet zien aankomen. Want om eerlijk te zijn snap ik niet wat ik zojuist heb gelezen. Ik begrijp natuurlijk de betekenis van alle woorden, maar wat is de opbouw, wat is het doel? Waar wil de schrijfster met dit verhaal naar toe, wat wil ze bereiken? Ik kon niet echt een samenhangend geheel, een rode draad ontdekken, waardoor het zich als een wazig verhaal met schijnbaar willekeurige gebeurtenissen voordeed, dat me totaal niet tevreden achterliet.
De personages hielpen ook niet om iets zinnigs van dit boek te maken. De een kiest macht boven alles en hoewel dit een verfrissende invalshoek kan zijn, kwam dit niet echt uit de verf. Net zoals de andere personages die gewoon vluchten. Vluchten voor hun verleden en hun verplichtingen en dit het grootste gedeelte van het verhaal blijven doen. Wat was dat toch boeiend om over te lezen…
Quin, Shinobu en John waren bovendien niet echt uitgewerkt. Tweedimensionaal. Ze groeiden niet met het verhaal mee, maar bleven hardnekkig aan hun overaanwezige, maar o zo verkeerde karaktertrekken vasthouden en weigerden eigenlijk om te veranderen.
Saving grace, wat me er van heeft weerhouden om met een geïrriteerde zucht dit boek op te geven, was het concept. Met zijn belofte van magie, spanning en onverwachte ontwikkelingen, hield dat mij aan het lezen. Om er tegen het einde echter achter te komen dat ook hier Seeker weer te kort in schoot, want de afwerking was verre van de mooie beloftes.
Oh en de Vrezen waren ook best wel interessant en leuk om over te lezen. Mysterieuze personen die met de Zoekers verbonden zijn. Zo raadselachtig dat je nog steeds niet weet wat ze nu met alles te maken hebben. Zij waren eigenlijk het enige wat een beetje goed uitgewerkt was, spanning en nieuwsgierigheid bij mij opwekten. Het waren de enige momenten dat ik geheel geconcentreerd het verhaal aan het lezen was…
Conclusie
Seeker is in mijn ogen de hype zeker niet waard. De vergelijking met Game of Thrones en de Hunger Games was in geen velden of wegen te bekennen. Het verhaal kwam voor mij niet tot leven en ik ergerde me groen en geel aan de hypocriete en onuitgewerkte personages. Bovendien was ik zoekende naar het geheel. Naar de rode draad die alle gebeurtenissen met elkaar verbond. Waar was die? Ik heb hem helaas niet kunnen vinden. Het concept was nog wel aardig, alhoewel slecht uitgewerkt en niet de moeite van het lezen van dit boek waard. Ben dan ook niet echt van plan om het volgende deel op te pakken.
