the actual premise of the book is really interesting, but there was no explanation or resolution at ALL. the characters felt very one dimensional, entirely focused around the one major flaw each of them had. the writing was very convoluted— if the writer was actually talented the book would be a third of the actual length. also each chapter ended in a way that felt like he thought he was being dramatic or funny  but it fell so flat.

"Story of one ordinary family and their unexpected adventure of a lifetime"? Absolutely not.

Excepected a fast-paced apocalyptic story full of said adventure, but got a slow burning character driven family drama instead.

Positives

  • Short alternating chapters
  • An easy read
  • Some dark humour

Negatives

  • Slow burn
  • Ending felt rushed, it's like the author dragged the story up to the last 50-70 pages and then unloaded everything to try catch up
  • Name dropping.. a lot of side characters, too many and whose names I already don't recall. I literally just finished the book.

So this book usually wouldn’t be my cup of tea but it’s base in reality and a location I’m familiar with got me interested as well as the author. This book was hard to put down but in the end there wasn’t any resolution so I’m hoping for a sequel. It was a lot of build up and then not many answers.
