The characters were all awful people. The book kept building and building, weaving a beautiful, complicated tapestry of these peoples lives in a black community in California and the repercussions Nadia and Luke must deal with after Nadia gets pregnant at 17 years old and has an abortion.

The author’s observations and commentary on race, culture, age, youth, I really enjoyed and for the first half of the book, I was highlighting a quote on almost every other page. There were several that made me take a step back and really thing about our world and how it treats the black community.

But after the 50% mark, the main characters development is utterly wasted and they stay stagnant for the rest of the book. Neither of them grow, they only become more toxic and worse people. Everyone lies, no one is faithful, everyone is selfish. Loved it until the 50% mark and then hated the rest of the book.

At points, I related to different characters. Elements of themselves I see in who I am. The Mothers are like an ever-present force and are so articulately displayed exactly like the church Mothers (and Grandmothers) I have known. I both hope one day to be one, know myself to already be one, and hope never to be like them. It's an odd sense of familiarity and love, whilst with that honest disdain at how churches can be self-destructive and fail to protect those they love the most.

i finished this book as i got to my destination on the subway and it felt like the universe was present w me. thank you brit bennett for reminding me what it feels like to be completely sucked into a book. but also i wanna fight you bc how could write a debut (!!!) novel this damn good. i think one has got to be my favorite between this and the vanishing half. soooo many good sentences i had to reread bc they were so poignant and made you think.
