Super interesting, varied and readable. Wandered a little in places because Kaufmann obviously had more research than she could really fit in (we've all been there!).

i loved the content but the writing style was dragging on, and i found myself skimming paragraphs that did not actively relate to the person being written about.
i can tell that kaufmann is passionate and well-versed in what she is writing about but god reading this was like trying to swallow dry crackers.
overall i enjoyed the book and learning about the black tudors but i would not tell someone to read this unless they were someone with experience in academic writing.

This was an ARC Goodreads.com giveaway. Kaufmann has published a version of her dissertation. It's a scholarly work. A fourth of the book consists of the end notes. She looks at specific people living in Tudor England. When details about the individuals are limited she fills in gaps by exploring what their professions would have looked like. She examines the lives of trumpeters, divers, sailors, tailors, prostitutes and others. This is a well written scholastic work.
