Great story! This book is all about interesting characters, with a slow-paced story. It's about family, love, choices, and feelings, with a simple yet touching style.
It was my first Ann Patchett's novel, and I really enjoy her writing style, blending past and present smoothly.

Bonus: I listened as an audiobook, and I was a little on the fence since it was my first audiobook novel. But I must say having Meryl Streep narrating really elevated the story for me! Highly recommend going with the audio version.

I listened to this book and enjoyed it thoroughly. I related to the characters and appreciated the restraint with which the story was told. To be fair though, I think I would enjoy Meryl Streep reading the phone book.

As an author, I admire the craft of the writing in this book. She knew where she was going, and went there in a clear and straightforward way with memorable characters I cared about and a story line that kept me interested.
I loved the way she handled the dual time lines, and the little aha moments when the two came together. So nicely done.
As a reader, I finished it in one long day because it was just enjoyable to read. I found myself smiling as I read it.
A simple story well told.

I did summer stock many moons ago . Every once in a while a memory would roll down my cheek. Beautifully written

As a character study, Tom Lake is wonderfully done. As a story, it's just meh. I found it bogged down in the middle quite a bit.

I listened to the audiobook, read by Meryl Streep, and it was a delight. This book is ultimately about nostalgia, regret, joy, and contentment.

What a great story! I was as anxious as Lara's daughters to hear the story of Duke.

Very conflicted on this one. The book was just ok for me - even a bit boring - at times. Then came the last 20 or so pages and holy cow! I think I may actually have to re-read this one (or listen to it read by Meryl Streep as recommended by so many reviewers). I have a feeling I missed many a nuance with the back and forth of time.
