This was not my favorite book in the series but a stepping stone to get to the last. I certainly have been enjoying the series as a whole but this one took a lot to get through, as most middle of the series do.

This is the first of the series I haven't read before, and almost every step had me blown away. Characters I've known for years are growing into forces of nature, sometimes literally. Kip, the protagonist, has taken after his father, and is now navigating the Satrapies as a leader, and a king. The war is ramping up, and it's affecting everyone deeply and dangerously. I'm almost nervous to finish the series!
