This was not my favorite book in the series but a stepping stone to get to the last. I certainly have been enjoying the series as a whole but this one took a lot to get through, as most middle of the series do.

The good: the main characters are coming to the apex of their character arcs, and it is so satisfying to see them all finally coming into their own. Karris in particular is at her absolute best, and it finally felt like she was no longer so entwined with Gavin; her feelings toward him felt a lot less...icky? There were some very solid and satisfying twists, especially those concerning Kip's parentage, the fate of (the real) Gavin, and black luxin . The characters all remain flawed, fascinating, and real.
The bad: unfortunately, the plot didn't go too far, and a lot of the major events seemed to happen off the page, such asKip's war in the Blood Forest and Liv becoming a god . I think a lot of it was trying to get the characters in place for the final book - and I've heard that the final book was fairly controversial, so I'm hoping it's not a waste.
