This one, well honestly it was tricky. See the Earl, Harrison gets told by the king he has to marry. Ok nothing strange there, it's the olden times after all. And he is lucky and the woman in question is pretty and he falls for her. So nothing strange there.

BUT, see Angelina is in love with someone else. Ok, no problem, I am sure Harrison can win her over. But, see the man in question loves her back. Wait, that is weird right. I thought this was a romance. Harrison is the odd man out.

So while reading I kept thinking about that. Harrison could not back away, he had to marry her. And she starts to have feelings for Harrison. Oh this triangle is getting tricky. There is one thing that saved it for me. She fell for the man when she was 16 and said she would wait for him until he gets back (India, he was a soldier) and he was like 20 years older. That was truly what saved it for me. Sheesh man, she is way too young. He was all I will wait until you are older, no man. You already lost me, and her love was obviously a crush.

Ok so that was half my review talking about that. But it was strange you know. I do not know if I ever have come across a situation like this...

About the characters. Angelina likes to rescue things and her dad gambles too much (therefore she must marry). Harrison used to be a scoundrel but is now an Earl and he steps up. And the last person in this triangle, Maxwell, oh I never liked him. He was all my scars! He had ptsd too (not that that is bad), and he really should find someone older.

A romance you wish for but it scared will not happen.

Narrator: Barrie Kreinik
I liked her voices. But I must say just as men do women voices "strange" so do women do men. Obviously. But it still works.
The chapters just flew away.

Another good novel from Grey. Again, reformed rakes are catnip, and this virginal miss had as much personality as the last one. I loved the way the hero handled the romance, giving the woman space and asking for consent before breaking the rules (when it came to her person anyway). I love the friendship. And I felt for the man on the side who was never going to win the girl. Good story line overall, although the use of the Prince is as weird in this book as it was in the last one.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Harrison and Angelina are interesting and well-developed characters. I enjoyed their journey and romance. I found these two relatable and I was sucked into their story from the start. I enjoyed getting to see Bray and Louisa from the previous book in the series – but I would have liked to have seen more of them. Many of the secondary characters added colour to the story, especially the animals. Loved the dogs.

Summary

Harrison Thornwick, never imagined that he would lose his brother and his family to a disease and the family manor practically burned down to the ground. Harrison hasn't had to live a life of responsibility to now. So he sets aside his gambling, drinking and carousing to do what needs to be done. But while in the process of rebuilding, the prince gives him an ultimatuum marry the woman he has in mind or be tossed in prison for a duel he had no choice but to participate in. Miss Angelina Rule, is a true lady, but also has other interests. She is shocked to learn that her father, has huge gambling debts and in order to keep him from debtor's prison and having herself and her grandmother tossed in the street, she must marry the Earl of Thornwick even though her heart is set on another. Harrison knows that he will have to be persistent, patient and understanding when winning over the lovely Angelina. He knows she is set on another man, but he is determined to prove to her of his genuine feelings for her.

The Hero

Harrison Thornwick has lost his whole family though various circumstances. He never thought he would become the earl when he was the fourth son. Harrison admits that he spends too much time with the pleasures that the city has to offer and not enough spending time with his family. He lost the woman he loved when she loved another man...his brother. And now that they have died, three months later he is still struggling with his grief and rebuilding the family manor. And just to add more weight upon his shoulders, he has no choice but to marry and he doesn't even get to choose his own bride. But when Harrison meets Angelina he is spellbound by her. She is fascinating, beautiful and everything he could ever want in a bride. I truly adored Harrison, he comes off as a bad boy at times but he is so much more than that. He has some hidden depths and it was quite revealing to see them come out. He is a man that likes his own way in things, he isn't afraid of some competition but is still honorable.
Though I'm seldom a gentleman, I do on few occasions decide to be one. I wanted to let you know I can be a gentleman. I can, at times, follow the rules and do the right thing, but it is never as easy, enticing or satisfying as doing what's forbidden

The Heroine

Angelina is a heroine I just gravitated to instantly....honestly I think I could have been friends with her in another life. She lost her mom when she was younger and has been taught by her grandmother the social graces to get her ready for her first season. Her father she loves, and will do anything to help him. The past three years she has been in love with a military officer. Angelina loves to paint and help out stray dogs. I love her kind heart and the ways she goes about to help her father and she does get a bit creative in helping him with his debts so that she can marry the man she wants. I did enjoy her quite a bit, and even though she was a bit naive on occasion I did feel that she was realistic.

Plot and Story Line

The Earl Claims a Bride is a book I have had on my reader for over a year now and I still can't believe I waited so long to read this one. But whew am I glad that I picked this one up especially since its my first book from this author. First off I want to point out that this book can be read as a stand alone. The series is based on three friends from Eton and their own stories. So its loosely connected but not too much though although, I am intrigued by the two friends and I can't wait to get my hands on the other two books.

Now this book sets off with seeing our hero get the horrible news from his family following a duel he didn't even want to participate in. What I noticed first off from him, though, was how honorable he is. He doesn't let anger or frustration get the better of him. The author here really pulled me in quite quickly with this book. Then we get to our heroine and seeing her save another stray that is a puppy and been injured. We see her kind nature from the beginning and I loved her personality. We do get a little mix of the love triangle trope. Now first off we know who is the obvious man she will eventually pick but we have an added complication---an injured officer of the military who pursues her at the same time. Now his situation really melted my heart, because he lost his eye and has some scarring and she is the only one that sees him beneath the injury. He is full of anger though because of what has happened to him. But Angelina handles him so well. We see that she has great chemistry with Harrison and doesn't have the same feelings that she used to have and realizes the difference between love and an infatuation. Amelia Grey really handled this aspect of the story very well. The only issue I had with the story was the actual romance between Harrison and Angelina. I didn't feel as involved as I wanted to, it felt a bit off balanced in moments. However, I did enjoy this story quite a bit: sweet and fun and definitely want to pick up the other books.

The Cover

What a cover....I just love everything about it. I love the pose here, its different from the norm you usually see in HR. I like the sitting down set, and I love the tone of colors. And her dress is so gorgeous....the cover is sexy yet tender too.

Overall View

The Earl Claims A Bride is a sweet love story that engages the reader and pulls them into a ride of charm and sensuality.

Harrison Thornwick is given a choice by the Prince, marriage or prison. He's only just come into the earldom. As a fourth son, he was far, far down the family line to inherit. Now his only focus is rebuilding the family manse (locals burned it down as a superstitious measure after Harrison's family died of a fever).
Angelina is dreaming of the man she wants to marry, a captain in the army. Not some rogue who is more known for his exploits than his heroic attempts. But her father will be put in debtor's prison if she doesn't marry Harrison.
Blergh. I generally like Amelia Grey but this was not one of her better books. I rounded up to three stars but it was really more like a two and a half. There were so many story threads but none were really developed. And I never got why Harrison loved Angelina. He just sees her across a ballroom? I almost felt like it was more about the competition with her other beau. And the whole subplot of Angelina trying to save her father... what was the resolution? It just felt underdeveloped. A disappointing follow-up to a book I thoroughly enjoyed.

When a trilogy is called The Heirs Club of Scoundrels, who can resist? I love a good Regency, and I love a good scoundrel, so what could possibly go wrong? Plus, we have a feisty heroine with a scheme, scoundrel friends of the hero, and a small pack of stray dogs. Then there's the whole arranged marriage plot - that’s always been a good staple of the genre. And it works.

Harrison Thornwick is a reckless rogue, a gambler, and an expert marksman. As the fourth son of the Earl, no one ever expected him to end up a member of the Heir’s Club, but when his last brother, and his entire family, dies in a fever outbreak, Harrison is left the only surviving heir, and is declared the Earl of Thornwick. Unfortunately, this comes from directly from the Prince Regent, along with the order to marry a certain debutante by the end of the Season, one Miss Angelina Rule.

Angelina is also being blackmailed into the relationship - her father owes more than a fair amount to a variety of creditors and has gambled away what little they had left. On the prince’s word, the creditors have backed off for now, but only until the end of the Season. Angelina must marry Harrison to keep her father out of debtors' prison. But Angelina already has a beau, of sorts - one Captain Maxwell, recently returned from India, is also looking for a wife, and their previous acquaintance has left the Captain with an idea, and Angelina in love. Now she has to figure out a third way out of this issue - one where her father doesn’t go to jail, and she isn’t forced to marry someone against her will.

Harrison is lovely. Absolutely lovely. Who doesn’t like the reformed rake, after all? He never expected to end up with the title, but now that he has it, he is determined to do what is best for his family and name. I admire the dedication. Though the beginning is Harrison-heavy, that fades drastically once we meet Angelina. The majority of the story from that point onward seems to be from her point of view. But Harrison’s wooing of Angelina was absolutely wonderful. He’s just ever so slightly manipulative, but it works. The whole absence makes the heart grow fonder line? Not just a line.
