Perfectly captures the feeling of being a twentysomething who has doubts about who you are and what you want to/can accomplish

Boring dull book! I was totally disappointed 😞 I was expecting something to relate to, but I just found nothing but long pages full of non sense descriptions and a poor meaning.

I listened to the audiobook, but I don't think it influenced my experience of the text one way or another. I found the story quietly charming for its appreciation of small details and the nuances of relationships. It also revealed my prejudice - until the midpoint of the novel, I pictured the title character as a white woman, maybe a bit like Miss Pillsbury from Glee. I was surprised to find halfway through the book that she is actually Chinese. This fact has little bearing on the plot, which I found surprising. I realized that very often when a character's ethnicity is explicitly stated, that ethnicity plays a significant role in the development of the character. In this case, however, it is only mentioned as an aside, and as the book continued, I found myself picturing Miss Pillsbury again.

My sister went to the school where Ms. Hempel "works". And I guess I did too...
