I got an ARC of this book.

The author has finally come into her own in this book! The writing is miles beyond what the first books in the series were. It was so drastic of a difference that I was impressed within the first chapter. There is more showing and less telling. Characters actually are distinct. The word choices are better. Just a HUGE yes on the progress.

The story itself is the weakest. The idea of a person of color who was assaulted by the police would be set up with a cop is just ick. I liked the cop before this story. I assumed the author was white based on how everything was written. Someone who literally shakes at the sight of the police is not going to magically transform to fetishizing the outfit in a few days. It is just nonsense.

The romance was so slow burn that I enjoyed that aspect. I wished they hadn’t hooked up to start the relationship drama. It took away a lot of the slow burn feeling for me, but it also made it so I didn’t have to wait 150 pages for sex. Sex between two men in their late 40’s. I so rarely see sex between “older” men. It is like gay romances stop around late 20’s/early 30’s. So the age of the love interests is YES. Though the sex still lacked consistent condom usage.

There was still a bit of fat shaming in this book. Why is it here? I get that one of the characters is super into muscle, but making the point repeatedly about weight and muscles was over kill. It was annoying and unnecessary. I wish this was something the author would grow out of.
